Some people – especially those of a humanist stripe – are uncomfortable with rituals. Rituals can seem pointlessly repetitive and annoyingly “churchy”. However, Confucian philosophy (one of the most humanistic of religious philosophies) shows us that rituals provide a framework for good manners, justice, science, and even mathematics and logic. Perhaps the rituals we practice with each other on Sunday morning aren’t so bad, after all.
