Religious Education

A row phots surrounded by a rough border. The photos are: a man teaching a room full of children; children with a long Chinese dragon; a young woman reads a story; our religious education director smiling; two boys smiling.

The Fellowship offers Religious Education (RE) classes for children and youth each Sunday during the first service ( 9:30 am) and the second service (11:00 am).  These two sessions are similar except that the middle school youth group, Tweens, and our high school youth group, YRUU, meet only during the second service. During the summer, RE classes are offered only during the second service.  Nursery care is offered at both service times.

If your children will be visiting our classes, you must complete a yellow Visitors Form and give it to a teacher.  Be sure to let the teacher know if your child has any food allergies or special needs.  Classes are taught by a rotating team of parent volunteers.

If your children attend more than 3 times you must register your child by completing the blue Child Information/Registration form. The forms are available on the counter, next to the mailboxes near the office entrance.  For more information about RE, please contact Lisa Wellens, Director of Religious Education, at 760-597-1329 or by email.

Children’s Religious Education Classes

Nursery/Pre-School - For infants and children to four years old, this program begins with a candle-lighting circle time followed by free play and craft time. The children play outdoors in the pre-school play yard, supervised by adults, then have snacks while listening to a story in the classroom. The class is taught by Bob Kintz and Jasmine Maldonado.

SUMMER PROGRAM - SIX SOURCES SUMMER

This summer, we explore Unitarian Universalist Identity through learning about our UU Six Sources:

Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life;

Words and deeds of prophetic women and men which challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion and the transforming power of love;

Wisdom from the world’s religions which inspires us in our ethical and spiritual life;

Jewish and Christian teachings which call us to respond to God’s love by loving our neighbors as ourselves;

Humanist teachings which counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science, and warn us against idolatries of the mind and spirit;

Spiritual teachings of Earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature.

The Primary through Tweens classes will spend the summer Sundays engaging in activities: art, music, drama and movement that relate to each Source.

Primary Class (Pre through 1st grade) Meets in the Alcott Room.

Intermediate Class (2nd through 5th grade) Meets in the Reeve Room.

Tweens (6th through 8th grade) Summer Schedule: Meets on the Patio

Young Religious Unitarian Universalists (YRUU) - Our high school group for young people aged 14 to 18. YRUU meets every Sunday in the library for worship, discussion and social action.

Religious Education Committee Meeting

The Religious Education Committee meets the third Wednesday of every month at 6:30 PM in the Reeve Room.

The vision of the Religious Education Committee is that children and youth ages 0 to 18 will:

  • Develop a UU Identity;
  • Become knowledgeable and aware of UU heritage, history and principles;
  • Develop a dedication to service;
  • Establish personal core values;
  • Establish spiritual and religious traditions;
  • Acquire the necessary tools to embark on a lifelong spiritual path
